가파도는 대정읍 모슬포에서 5.5 Km 남쪽에 떨어져 있는 섬으로 모슬포와 마라도의 중간쯤에 자리하고  있다. 이 섬의 면적은 0.84평방킬로미터로서 마라도 보다 약 2.5배가 크다. 이 섬은 원래 국유 우마목장 이었으나 19세기 중엽부터 사람이 거주하기 시작하여 현재는 약 천여 명의 주민이 살고 있다. 　이　가파도 주변은 파도가 거칠어서 가끔 파선하는 일이 있는데 그중에서도 1653년 네델란드의 선박인  스펠웰호가 가파도에 표착한 사건은 유명하다. 그 배에 승선하고 있던 헨드릭 하멜이 그 후에 고국으로 돌아가서 저술한 "화란선 제주도난파기"와 "조선국기(朝鮮國記)"를 저술함으로써 우리나라가 처음으로 서양에 소개된 바가 있다.

This island is located 5.5 Km south from Moseulpo in Taejeong-eup and is situated between Moseulpo and Marado Island. The total area is 0.84 sq. Km and about 2.5 times larger than Marado Island. This was an uninhabited island and was used as a national ranch for cows and horses, but from the middle of the island and there are about 1000 people there today. 　In 1653, a Dutch ship was wrcked nearby and the Dutchman, Hendrick Hamel, published two books of his chronicle regarding Korea after he returned home. This was the was the very first occasion Korea was introduced to the eyes of the western hemisphere.
